At least three satellites are required to ensure global transmission and satellite communication.

On the other hand, LEO satellites orbit the Earth at approximately 300-750 miles above the surface. The orbital period is generally around 95-120 minutes, and the speed is about 12,500-15,500 miles per hour.

LEO systems comprise a satellite constellation in which individual satellites act as switches. If the satellites are too close to each other, they establish a connection via an inter-satellite link (ISL). Your mobile phone communicates with these satellites through user mobile links (UMLs). There are three major categories of LEO satellites:

  • Little LEOs – These satellites broadcast signals under 1GHz and are good for low-rate messaging.
  • Big LEOs – Operating between 1GHz and 3GHz, big LEOs work great for high-rate messaging.
  • Broadband LEOs – The final group is similar to a fiber-optic network.
